Encounters of
Jewish-Sephardi Cultures

15th to 18th June 2017
Bragança, Portugal

15th to 17th June 2017
Bragança, Portugal

Framework

The more than two millennia of Jewish presence in the nowadays Portuguese territory, have marked in a indelible way History and Culture, and deep down the identity and the ideas. From politics to economics, arts and science to the more simple habits and costumes, there are today numerous traces of its presence and influence, patrimony increasingly valued, rediscovered and liable to be used in a very positive way on the dynamics of development and territorial cohesion.

The Trás-os-Montes region, possesses a set of characteristics favorable to the development of a cultural diversity affirmation strategy grounded in an immaterial patrimony of a Jewish-Christian past still present.

The Sephardi patrimonial and identity dynamization may be one fundamental pole in the recreation of connections from Bragança to the world’s more developed poles, either New York or Malaysia, remarkable areas of the planet where there are many Sephardic. Moreover, the development of a solid strategy in the contact with Jewish families possibly originating from Bragança may be, undoubtedly, a very effective way of captivate investment and to place the city in the map of the priorities, not only touristic ones.

So, the important scientific contribution developed by the Museu Abade Baçal, and in particular the Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Sefardita do Nordeste transmontano, and Bragança Sefardita - Memorial e Centro de Documentação, should be seen only as the beginning of the rediscovery and acknowledgement of a culture process, that helped forge the Trás-os-Montes identity.

Project

With the marked patrimony, material and immaterial, and with the vast and deep inheritance attested in an immense specialized bibliography, Bragança must leverage its development in several pillars, being that one of the most differentiators is, surely, the referred Sephardi inheritance.

With a diaspora around many thousands of Jews and New Christians descendants escaped from Portugal, the brigantina city has an human patrimony, of possible attractiveness, immense and of cultural, financial and economic dimensions, deserving a very careful evaluation.

In fact, along with the development enabled by the University Campus, as well as some industries, the connection of Bragança to all the planet through the descendants of Jews of the region may be a bond of feelings which potentiates in an unique form the development of the region, catalyzing and centralizing the memories, the affections and the recurrent desire to find the family “roots”.

This event/project emerges following the reflections pointing to the implementation of a strategy to this territory – its acknowledgement and internationalization -, starting from the promotion of the cultural equipments about the Sephardi and Jewish Culture in Bragança: the Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Sefardita do Nordeste Transmontano; Memorial e Centro de Documentação, Bragança Sefardita. But also of the material and immaterial patrimony with Vestiges and references to the Jewish and Sephardi Culture in the region of Trás os Montes, such as: Museu Abade de Baçal, rio Fervença, rua de judiarias, aldeia do Carção, Mogadouro, Cortiços, Chacim, etc.

A major event is proposed, for 4 days, of international character, with 4 main objectives:

To raise awareness to the Jewish Religious Cultural Tourism (national and international); To bring to Bragança internationally renowned figures, Jewish and Sephardic, in a connection with Spain: artists, investigators, historians, investors, Sephardic descendants; To make an impact in the specialized media and generalist media on the importance of the Sephardi Culture, in a recent past, and in our near future, and (re) place Bragança in the International Routes, through a new centrality.
